Summary
The Big Thompson River is a tailwater tributary of South Platte River. Originating in Forest Canyon in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Big Thompson flows into Lake Estes in the town of Estes Park and then through Big Thompson Canyon. It includes four crossings/bridges which are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Fishing Report
Water levels on the Big Thompson can fluctuate daily depending on the amount of water being released from Olympus Dam and current runoff levels, so always monitor water levels closely for safety purposes. The main hatches at the moment are BWO's and midges. Indicator rigs with nymphs will be the name of the game when hatches aren't active. Pre-runoff streamer action is always in the cards as well, so don't forget to pack the big stuff.
